Introduced in 2006, the American Buffalo was the first U.S. coin crafted from 24-karat pure gold. This one-ounce coin is a modern interpretation of James Earle Fraser's iconic Buffalo Nickel.
The coin's obverse features Fraser's renowned depiction of a Native American, while the reverse showcases a powerful American bison. The bison is believed to be modeled after Black Diamond, a famous zoo animal. While two of the individuals portrayed on the Native American side have been identified as Chief Iron Tail and Chief Two Moons, the identity of the third remains a mystery.
