Renowned as one of the world's most widely held bullion coins, the Krugerrand was introduced in 1967 to stimulate individual gold investment.
Designed by O. Schultz, the Krugerrand's obverse features President Paul Kruger, the first president of South Africa. The coin's inscription includes "SUID-AFRIKA" (Afrikaans) and "SOUTH AFRICA" in English.
The reverse, crafted by C.L. Steynberg, depicts a dynamic springbok antelope. It also displays the coin's issue date, weight, and gold purity. Unlike many coins, the Krugerrand lacks a face value as it was intended for international trade rather than domestic circulation.
Composed of 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper alloy, Krugerrands are minted in South Africa. The once government-owned South African Mint underwent privatization in 1988, becoming a subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank.
