President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned Saint-Gaudens to elevate the design of U.S. coinage. The obverse features Lady Liberty striding forward, adorned with a staff and olive branch. The reverse depicts a soaring bald eagle. The coin's initial design sparked controversy due to the omission of the "In God We Trust" motto, eventually added by congressional mandate.
Early versions of the $20 Saint-Gaudens were struck in high relief, creating a medal-like appearance. These are exceptionally rare. Subsequent mintages employed a flatter relief to facilitate circulation.
